About Darwin Audio Microphones

I’m Darwin and I run this one-person operation out of my garage in Oregon.

Darwin Audio started as a side project a few years back while I was teaching a college course for incoming freshmen on building positive study habits. One of the key assignments? Students pick something new to learn or improve over the 10-week term, and I have seen projects range from perfecting a fine dining recipe to repairing a muffler using YouTube to save himself some money.

I join in too. Some terms I pick up hobbies, like tie-dye or a sleight-of-hand magic trick. Other times, I use the opportunity to level up my microphones. That’s how the beer can mics came to life. That’s also how I developed my telephone microphones and 3D-printed adaptors that let my mics screw directly onto standard mic stands.

Each mic is crafted from solid steel beer and soda cans from the 1970s and earlier—before aluminum replaced these rigid cans. That thick steel shell creates a natural reverb chamber that gives every mic a lo-fi, raw, vintage tone. (Check out the demo reel)

Recording has become too sterile, perfect, and predictable. Add your own layer of lo-fi to the mix with one of my unique microphones.
